Charitable donations to Hospice down

Donations to Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice have dropped by over £40,000 (10%) in the first half of the financial year compared with the same period last year.

Closer analysis shows the decline is due to a 10% drop in the number of people giving to the Hospice, rather than a reduction in average gift size.

Commenting on these figures, Sarah Brocklebank, Chief Executive, said: “The fall in the number of people giving to the Hospice is obviously concerning for us and is something we need to address.  We receive only 12% of our funding from the NHS and therefore are very dependent on the generosity of our local community to raise the rest of our total £6m a year expenditure.

“We remain hugely grateful to those people who do support the Hospice – both financially as well as gifts of their time.  We are encouraged by the fact that the average gift size from remaining donors has not reduced despite the challenging economic climate we all find ourselves in.   However, it is essential that we reverse this decline in the number of our donations to enable us to continue to meet the demand for our specialist care.

“We therefore appeal to anyone who is thinking of making a charitable donation this Christmas to remember Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice; and one of our two exciting appeals.

“Pip’s Appeal is designed to raise enough money to fund one of our nurses; and Light up a Life gives local people an opportunity to remember a loved one at Christmas by sponsoring a light on the Hospice Christmas tree.”

“Your financial support will make a huge difference to local people. Jacqueline is the sister of a patient that we looked after last Christmas. She said “I can’t say enough about how generous and kind the nursing staff were. I’ve never known such a concentration of kindness”
