Hospice Support Sisters
Report 2000-2001
The
Hospice Support Sisters have had another busy year responding to the
ever-increasing number of patients referred to the Hospice Palliative Care
Team.
Being referred
to a hospice brings to mind feelings of anxiety, stress and fear of the
unknown. Our home visits are intended to explain what the Hospice has to
offer, to allay these anxieties and to offer helpful supportive advice on
symptom management to patients and their carers.
As a result of
our home visit many patients choose to attend Day Care and it is always such
a pleasure to see them enjoying the relaxed caring atmosphere experienced in
Barbers’ Day Care Centre. Our reputation has been built upon our ability to
recognise, respect and respond to the unique and varied needs of each
individual patient referred to our care.
Dame Cicely
Saunders (St Christopher's Hospice), once said, "that you matter all the
days of your life". This encapsulates all that is special about Hospice
palliative care.
Another
important aspect of our role is liaising and advising on all aspects of
palliative care with fellow professionals in the community. We have been
very pleased with the response to our bi-monthly teaching sessions for
district nurses and community staff. We are delighted that they have proved
to be so successful and value seeing so many familiar faces. This is an
ideal platform for the exchange of information, and keeping up to date with
palliative care issues.
