Clinical Nurse Specialist Team

The team has had another busy year meeting the ever-increasing needs of our patients in the community, so much so that the appointment of Shirley to our team as the third clinical nurse specialist has been highly valued. Visiting patients at home is a major part of our role and demands a sensitive, caring approach, as it can be a very emotional time for our patients, their families and friends.

District nurses meet regularly at the
Hospice to make contact with their
colleagues and learn about our work

Being referred to the Hospice can evoke feelings of fear, anxiety and increased stress to add to what is already a very stressful situation. We endeavour to allay these anxieties whilst addressing physical symptoms as well as emotional and psychological problems. All three of us are very aware that the first visit to a patient is vitally important in establishing relationships and future rapport, and it is an ideal time to explain the many services offered by the Hospice and to dispel common myths.

In collaboration with the Cancer and Palliative Care Network, our lunchtime teaching sessions for District Nurses and community staff have been extremely well attended with very positive feedback. We consider training and education in palliative care for the professional carers to be essential in order to meet the high standards of care required.

The team has achieved a great deal this year; thank you to all those who have supported us, it is much appreciated.
