Ian Logan
Ian Logan was not only a popular
and loyal member of A.F.D. he was well liked and known throughout the
athletics world. You could not attend any type of race fixture with Ian
without bumping into some one Ian knew.
Although not quite reaching
International recognition, Ian none the less achieved a high level of
success on all surfaces, track, road, and cross-country. Ian was an
ever-present member of Southern and National 12 stage relay teams of the
70’s, 80’s and early 90’s. Perhaps his most cherished moment was as a member
of the AFD cross country team that won the “National” in 1983 with Ian
finishing a highly rated 21st. Then being a member of the team
that retained the title in 1984 & 85.
Ian was an accomplished track
runner specialising in the steeplechase but with seriously fasts times over
1500, 3000 & 5000 metres. Which he continued into his first year as a
veteran athlete. Such was his enthusiasm for his sport that only 4 months
before his untimely death Ian competed for AFD in the National Vets Relay
Champs.
Ian was diagnosed with lung cancer
in August 1997 after what seemed like an innocuous back strain turned out to
be much more serious than anyone could have possibly have imagined.
Ian had been a member of AFD for
29 years when he died on
August 15th 1997 aged 41. With his passing many of us lost a true friend,
training & drinking partner, to a terrible disease. Thursday nights down
the pub after training has never been quiet the same. Ian is a sorely missed
friend who will run forever in our hearts and minds, his memory will be
further honoured by “
Logan’s Run”.
