Fire at Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice’s shop in Fleet

A fire was discovered at Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice’s shop in Fleet on Sunday 8 May 2011.

As a result of the fire, which started outside the shop, thousands of pounds worth of stock has been damaged which will have a detrimental impact on the funding of the Hospice which relies heavily on its shops to raise the £15,000 it needs everyday to keep its full range of services open.

“We were shocked to discover that there had been a fire at our shop in Fleet,” says Peter Foxton, Head of Retail at Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice. “Thankfully no one was injured during the fire, however, we have lost a significant amount of our irreplaceable stock which has been kindly donated by our loyal supporters. This coupled with our loss of trade over the week will have a detrimental impact on our ability to raise funds to help care for people affected by terminal illnesses in Fleet and the rest of West Surrey and North East Hampshire.  I would urge people to help us replenish the stock we have lost by taking unwanted items to one of our other 12 shops. The nearest shops to Fleet are located in Farnborough and Aldershot.”

This week the Hospice had plans to promote ‘Flutter Week’, a national event organised by the Hospice Lotteries Association to increase awareness of locally operated lotteries, through its 13 shops, including Fleet. The severe disruption caused by the fire means that the income raised through the sale of Tuckwell CHASE lottery tickets could also be affected. If you would like to participate in Flutter Week please call the Lottery office on 01252 728411.
