PHYSIOTHERAPY SERVICES
|
This has been
another busy year and one in which we have looked seriously at different
sorts of treatments and their success rates in the field of hospice care. In
recent years acupuncture has come to be regarded by an increasing number
of physiotherapists as another valuable tool for their profession. Clearly
it has a place in the hospice environment, where we are always looking to
provide an holistic approach to patient care. |
Acupuncture is used in the Hospice
to relieve the pain, insomnia and
stiffness that some patients experience |
With these
developments in mind, I have recently been working to obtain my membership
of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists.
Acupuncture –
from the Latin acus [needle] and pungere [to pierce] - is part
of the discipline of traditional Chinese medicine and involves the
stimulation of specific points either by the insertion of very fine needles
or non-invasively using a variety of techniques. The positive results
obtained speak for themselves and there is now clear evidence that this is
an effective way of treating a variety of symptoms.
Here in the
Hospice, patients have been successfully treated with acupuncture to relieve
pain, joint stiffness, nausea, insomnia and hot flushes and I have used it
successfully to aid relaxation and induce feelings of general well being.
The patients are offered a choice of traditional treatment with needles or
non-invasively with an infrared laser, which makes it an option even for
those who are not keen on the idea of more needles! I am looking forward to
helping more patients with this service.
