OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

After only eighteen months the role of Occupational Therapy within the multi-disciplinary team on the wards has become well established. The majority of my available hours are spent with in-patients, following the increase in the number of patients being admitted for symptom control, rehabilitation and respite care.

We plan to extend the Occupational Therapy service to patients attending Day Care while we continue to provide an improved service to the wards, so next year’s budget will contain a proposal for a second Occupational Therapist to join the team. Help from the outstanding team of volunteers with some of my clerical administration has also freed up extra time for me to spend with patients.

The Hospice is always keen to support the professional development of all of its staff and last September I attended the two day National Conference of Occupational Therapists working in Oncology and Palliative Care. The lectures were very informative and stimulated a plethora of new ideas that we can bring to the Hospice. I am very much looking forward to everything that the next twelve months has to offer.
