The Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Official Publication

No place like Home…
And so say all at Hospice Home Support

But what EXACTLY is Hospice Home Support? I hear you ask..

…HHS is an independent registered Charity within the UMBRELLA organization of The Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice.

It’s a free service, established to provide help and support for patients and their families, coping at home, with an illness which no longer responds to curative treatment.  This free service works in co-operation with general practitioners and district nurses.

We aim to help people stay at home for as long as they are able, with their family, friends and pets around them.  We train volunteers to offer practical help to patients and their families in many ways – for instance, taking people out, cooking, shopping or sitting with the patient for a few hours to give the carer some free time.  Undoubtedly, the greatest help we can give is to sit and listen.

All volunteers are trained by professional to assist in the care and support of patients living with serious illness; and they receive ongoing training and supervision while supporting patients and their families.

Our next Training Course starts in September 2001.  It’s a 12 week course (1 evening per week) with 1 weekend (non-residential).

GARDEN PROJECT BREAKING NEWS!

Visitors to the Hospice over the last week or so have noticed lots of gardening activity, particularly on the grassed area to the south side of the Hospice.  This is because, after months of discussion, we have at last embarked on our Garden Project – to totally re-develop our Hospice grounds, which should be completed by the end of May.

This has been made possible by financial support from various organizations:

BAE Systems  Who are providing the majority of the funds plus volunteer labour to carry out the work.

Eli Lilly  Who are funding the services of our Landscape Architect.

HtH Ellerman  Who have given us a £10K Grant to develop the area between the NEW Barbers Day Care Centre and the old Clifford Williams Ward.  The design and landscaping for this area is based on design ideas submitted by S/N Rebecca Callanan.

All the above has now been brought together as one combined project.  Work is now under way!

Congratulations to all concerned.

Watch out for more news and pictures in our next edition of Hospice Life.

It’s a Hospice Knockout

The first Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Charity “It’s a Knockout” Challenge was held at the Spectrum Leisure Centre in Guilford on Saturday 10th March 2001 – when teams from local companies and emergency services all ‘battled it out’ with giant inflatables for Honour, England, and Saint George – not to mention the ‘Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Charity Cup’! This was awarded to ‘Hardy’s Horses’ the team from Admiral Insurance led by Jessica Hardy.  In 2nd place ‘Harris Gang’ from Harpers and Websters and 3rd were ‘Waverley Warriors’ from Surrey Police.

We will be running another It’s a Knockout in the summer when the theme is going to be a little – oh all right then – will be very, very ‘Wet and Wild!’ so look out for further details in your local newspaper on contact Lillian Revill on 01252 729400.

The event is open to companies and anyone who can make up a team of 10 participants, each sponsored for £50 (team sponsorship being £500) – there is still time to apply.  Contestants need boundless energy and a sense of humour for this day of fun and laughter, whilst raising money for OUR very worthwhile local charity... THIS HOSPICE!
