IN THE PARK RAISES £70,000 FOR PHYLLIS TUCKWELL HOSPICE
The Rotary Club of
Farnborough handed over a cheque for £70,000 to the Phyllis Tuckwell
Hospice at a luncheon at the Hospice on Thursday September 20 2007.
The magnificent sum was
from the proceeds of the Picnic To Music In The Park event that was
staged at the King George V Playing Fields in Farnborough over the
weekend of July 7/8 2007.
The official handover
was made by Rotary Club President Neil Wilson to Hospice President
Chris Tuckwell. There were also addresses made to the 60 strong
representation from Rotary members and sponsors by Graham Brookland
(Hospice Fundraiser responsible for the event), John Anderson
(Rotary Club “Picnic” Chairman), Chris Tuckwell (Hospice President)
and Brian Lowe (Hospice Head of Trustees).
Organised by the Rotary
Clubs of Farnborough this was the fourth and most successful
“Picnic” in aid of the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice.
A sell out crowd on
Saturday evening was hugely entertained with tribute acts to The
Beatles (Back Beat Beatles), Tina Turner (Dolly James) and Queen
(Magic A Kind Of Queen).
On Sunday evening a
wonderful patriotic crowd numbering 3000 saw a first time visit to
Farnborough of the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra. Playing
such classics from Puccini, Strauss and Tchaikovsky the
entertainment concluded with a traditionally British Pomp and
Circumstance Proms finale with a rousing Grand Firework Display to
the 1812 Overture.
“Picnic” Chairman John
Anderson spoke enthusiastically at the luncheon and praised so many
people for their invaluable support for the event stating, “We are
so thankful to so many people and organisations for their support. A
lot of Rotary Clubs supported the event magnificently and worked
extremely hard but the camaraderie and fellowship was great.
“To all the sponsors,
Rushmoor Borough Council, Hampshire Fire and Police we thank you
sincerely for your support. Our aim was to raise vital funds for the
Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice who have been a beneficiary at each
“Picnic” event whilst also providing entertainment for the local
community. It is such a well respected local charity based for local
people and it plays a significant part within Farnborough and
surrounding areas.
“We are delighted to be
able to provide the Hospice with such a sizeable amount from the
event. We calculated that the four “Picnic” events have now raised
over £175,000 which is a truly wonderful amount.”
Hospice Fundraiser
Graham Brookland, who was performing his last official duty at the
Hospice, added, “This is the largest amount the Hospice has ever
received through one single event. It has been a privilege to be
involved and work with the Rotary Club of Farnborough and their
fellow organizations over the past five years. I would like to thank
the committee of the event for their sterling work and enthusiasm
and in particular Sue Evans who has made such a valuable
contribution over the years. This marvellous amount of money is
testament to the way the event is organised and arranged. It is a
truly professional approach from start to finish. Farnborough is a
major town within the catchment area of the Hospice and we are so
grateful for the continued support we receive. Without events such
as Picnic to Music In The Park the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice would
not be able to continue to provide the special service that it plays
within the local community”.
Organisers wish to thank
all sponsors to “The Picnic” without whose generosity and financial
backing in the early planning it would not be possible to stage the
event: Central Heating Services, Clydesdale Bank, Fairview New Homes
Ltd, McCarthy and Stone (Assisted Living), Farnborough Business
Park, Key Property Investment Ltd, The PD Group, EBB Paper,
Farnborough News and Mail, Mitchell and Partners, Davies, Blunden
and Evans, Rushmoor Borough Council, TAG Aviation, BAE Systems,
Sanya China Travel and Stagecoach Buses.
