LEAVING A GIFT IN YOUR WILL TO THE HOSPICE

Why should you make a Will?

87% of the population dies with a Will; yet only 5% of those who die leave a legacy to charity.

(statistics provided by Smee and Ford, 2004).  Contrast this to the proportion of the population (around 80%) who regularly make gifts to charity, from throwing a coin in a bucket to attending fundraising events, or make regular donations through the payroll.

On average you live three years longer if you leave a legacy to charity than if you don’t.

A gift left to charity in your Will is not subject to inheritance tax, so it could reduce the amount of tax payable on your estate.

If the value of your estate (including your house and other assets) is above the threshold of £263,000, inheritance tax is payable at 40%. However, the following are exempt from inheritance tax:
  • anything you leave to your husband or wife
  • anything you leave to a UK registered charity, and
  • any bills outstanding at your death, including your funeral expenses
Example
Mr Brown died in May 2004.  He left £40,000 to his favourite charity and the rest of his estate to his daughter.

A Will is a simple and effective way to help the people and the causes you care about.

What difference would a gift in your Will make to the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice?

  • A gift to the Hospice in your Will would be a gift to future generations in this area.

  • Your gift would help local people with cancer, motor neurone diseases and other life-limiting illnesses who need our support to be able to get the most out of whatever time they have left.

  • Your gift would help carers and families who need our support both before and after bereavement.

  • Your gift would help the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice to plan for the future, with more than one third of our income coming from gifts in people’s wills.
