MARATHON
THANKS FROM PHYLLIS TUCKWELL HOSPICE
The Phyllis
Tuckwell Hospice was well represented at Sunday’s London
Marathon with over 20 runners completing the arduous 26 miles
despite the sweltering conditions in a record field of over 36,000
runners.
Cranleigh father
and son partnership CHRIS AND TOM FINILL made a little piece
of history. Chris has completed every London Marathon since its
inception in 1981 and actually came 328th on Sunday with
a tremendous time of 2 hours, 49 minutes, 04 seconds. Tom, who has
just turned 18, was running his first marathon and did so in a time
of 4:12:12; he is the youngest ever representative of the Hospice.
A delighted
PHIL ALEXANDER from Farnborough could hardly contain his delight
at the finishing line after completing his first marathon in
5:20:15. Phil, who was running in memory of his best friend Tony
Rose who passed away in the Hospice in May 2006, is aiming to raise
£6000 and said, “It was a fantastic feeling crossing the line. At 18
miles my knee suddenly started to give way and I was struggling but
the crowd and the reason why I was running the Marathon was what saw
me through. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity”.
Farnham resident
SCOTT BUTLER, 36, has already raised over £10,000
through his fundraising efforts which began after his brother in law
Stuart Williams was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour (Astrocytoma).
Stuart, a married father with two children, has been a Day Patient
at the Hospice for the past two years. Scott completed the course on
Sunday in 5:42:42.
TONY WILSON,
also from Farnham, completed his first marathon at the age of 58 in
6:01:58. MAUREEN COFFIN, also from Farnham, finished in
5:48:59.

ROB WHEELER, 36, ran in memory of his father, who was a hospice
patient in Jersey. The former captain of the Cranleigh Rugby Club,
Rob was outside his time of 2004 completing the course in 5:15:41
There were also
runners from outside the catchment area raising funds for the
Phyllis Tuckwell on Sunday. This included MICHAEL GALLAGHER
(Hungerford) – 4:31:27 and ALISON LATTEY, whose mum Sue is a
nurse at the Hospice. Wimbledon based Alison finished in 5:43:00.
Hospice Community
Fundraiser Graham Brookland said, “It was a tremendous occasion in
difficult conditions for the runners. We are honoured to have so
many people showing such commitment and dedication to the Phyllis
Tuckwell Hospice.
“It is true to say
that the Hospice would not be able to provide the service that it
does without the support of the local community and this, in the
week of the re launch of our Living Appeal, is a great example of
how local people are touched by the Hospice.
“On behalf of the
Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice I would like to thank all the runners for
their wonderful support not just on Sunday but also in the testing
months of training building up to the event. We are confident that
such commitment will raise over £30,000 of sponsorship which is
invaluable to the Hospice.”
