SUPPORT
THE PHYLLIS TUCKWELL HOSPICE LONDON MARATHON TEAM
The Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice has over 20 runners entering this
Sunday’s London Marathon. Last year the Marathon runners raised over
£30,000 for the Hospice and this year’s entrants are on course to do
so again.
Farnham resident SCOTT BUTLER, 36, has already raised
over £10,000 through his fundraising efforts which has included a
Charity Poker Night held in London. Scott’s association with the
Hospice began after his brother in law Stuart Williams was diagnosed
with a malignant brain tumour (Astrocytoma). Stuart, a married
father with two children, has been a Day Patient at the Hospice for
the past two years. TONY WILSON is also from Farnham. The
former landlord of the Alma Public House is running his first
London Marathon at the age of 58. MAUREEN COFFIN, also from
Farnham, supported the Hospice at the Marathon two years ago and is
doing so again.
The COVE JOGGERS are a local running club from Farnborough
and they have at least eight runners representing the Hospice on
Sunday, Dave Boulter, Dave Daborn (who is celebrating his 60th
birthday), Pauline Dawkins, Dennis Davey, Brian Fisher, John
Havelock, Alison Kingston and Peter Neil.
PHIL ALEXANDER, 31,
is also from Farnborough and is running his first London Marathon.
He is dedicating his run in memory of his best friend, Tony Rose,
who passed away in the Hospice in May 2006. Phil said, “I want to
run for the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice because of the amazing job that
they did whilst Tony was a patient”. Other Hospice runners on Sunday
include Camberley based ANNE-MARIE MCLAREN and LIAM DUFFY.
Aldershot based MARTIN GEAR is aiming to complete the 26
miles this year after having the misfortune to miss out last year
when injury prevented him from running whilst NIGEL MARCHANT
from Fleet also runs. NEIL SIMMONDS from Frimley and
NATASHA O’TOOLE from Sandhurst are also representing the
Hospice. Natasha also supported the Hospice recently at the 24 hour
swimming marathon organised by O’Tooles Swimming School. The event
was held in Sunninghill. Aldershot based Blackwater Valley Runners
also have a Hospice supporter in NICK BURCHNALL who is
running his first London Marathon in 11 years.
Cranleigh based ROB WHEELER, 36, is running in memory of his
father, who was a hospice patient in Jersey. A former captain of the
Cranleigh Rugby Club Rob is aiming to beat is 2004 time of 4 hours
47 minutes. CHRIS FINILL, also from Cranleigh, has completed
every London Marathon. Sunday will be a special occasion for the
Finill family because Chris’ son, TOM FINILL is running his
first at the age of just 18! The youngest runner ever to represent
the Hospice.
There are also runners from outside the catchment area raising funds
for the Phyllis Tuckwell on Sunday. This includes MICHAEL
GALLAGHER (Hungerford) and ALISON LATTEY, whose mum Sue
is a nurse at the Hospice. Alison lives in Wimbledon.
Hospice Community Fundraiser Graham Brookland said, “The effort,
dedication and commitment of our London Marathon runners is
absolutely fantastic. We are so grateful to all the runners who are
supporting the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice on Sunday. We had a
reception evening recently where we invited everybody that is
running in aid of the Hospice this year and in 2006 and it is
refreshing to learn of the energy and enthusiasm everybody has. Many
people are supporting the Hospice on Sunday for their own reasons
and I sincerely hope that the day meets their expectations on what
is also an emotional occasion. It is an important period for the
Hospice and with such a vast amount of money required each year to
continue the role that we do within the community I cannot emphasise
enough how important our London Marathon runners are to us.”
