HOSPICE WELCOMES ITS
BIGGEST SUPPORTERS
|
The Master of the Worshipful Company of
Barbers, Sir Barry Jackson, tries out acupuncture for the first time,
under the expert eye of Carolyn Nash, the Hospice's physiotherapist. |
The Phyllis
Tuckwell Hospice yesterday welcomed one of its most loyal supporters, the
Worshipful Company of Barbers. A group from the livery company, including
the Master and his wife, Sir Barry and Lady Sheila Jackson, presented the
Hospice with a cheque for £22,000 at the end of their visit.
During the
day, three therapists from the Hospice demonstrated some of the skills and
care they offer to patients and carers at the Hospice and at home. Sir
Barry volunteered to try acupuncture, which is used by some patients at the
Hospice to alleviate pain, nausea and insomnia. Complementary therapist
Bridget Purser spoke movingly of the way she had helped to relieve stress
and anxiety among cancer sufferers facing the end of life.
The livery
company, based in London, has had close links with the Hospice since its
foundation 25 years ago, when Sir Edward Tuckwell, the husband of Phyllis
Tuckwell, was the Queen’s surgeon and a member of the Worshipful Company of
Barbers.

HOSPICE MAKES PLANNING
APPLICATION
The Phyllis
Tuckwell Hospice is submitting an application to Waverley Borough Council to
amend planning permission granted in 1996 to redevelop parts of the
Hospice’s premises in South Farnham.
The Hospice
is currently undertaking a programme of local consultation on the proposed
developments and is briefing staff and volunteers on the impact of the
likely changes on their work with patients and carers.
The Hospice
hopes to redevelop the currently dilapidated northeastern wing of the
Hospice, which is used for storage. If planning permission is granted, the
new Therapy and Training Wing will house consultation rooms, therapy rooms
and a training facility in line with the Hospice’s aim to improve and extend
services to local patients and carers. The plan also includes the opening
of a new access from Waverley Lane and an extension to the Day Care
facility.

Aldershot Town Football Club supporter
Nick Jolly is to travel to all Nationwide Conference football club
grounds on his scooter in August in aid of the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice.
The ride will commence on Saturday August 21
when the shots travel to Crawley Town. Nick will start the journey after the
match with a long haul down to Exeter. In total he will complete 1316 miles
within the week before arriving back at the Recreation Ground in time for
the shots home fixture versus Burton Albion on August 28. He will be
introduced to the crowd at half time of this fixture.
Nick has chosen the hospice as his charity after
his father Ray was a Day Care patient in 2002. He sadly passed away later in
the year but the memory of the attention he was given has remained. Nick
said “My Dad was so well looked after at the hospice and I want to repay the
kindness shown to him and my family by the wonderful staff they have there.
With the hospice also being the official charity of the football club this
is an appropriate way to do so”.
Nick is hoping to be met at each of the 22 clubs
and will take a photograph at each ground.
If you would like to sponsor Nick in his ride
you can do so on line at the following website-
www.justgiving.com/jolly or by sending a donation to Graham Brookland

HOSPICE FLAG DAY THANK
YOU TO FARNBOROUGH
The Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice wishes to thank the
public of Farnborough for their tremendous support at the recent Flag Day
held in the town.
The Flag Day, held on Saturday June 26 raised a
total sum of £641.76.
The hospice is grateful to all those who
supported the Flag Day and to the many volunteer collectors who gave up
their valuable time in aid of the local hospice.
Furthermore thanks are also given to Rushmoor
Borough Council who permitted the collections in both towns.
The Phyllis Tuckwell
Hospice provides care for people with a progressive illness for whom there
is no longer a curative treatment and enables them to live life to the full.
It includes a catchment area of 600,000 people covering the majority of the
GU postcodes. In addition to the 650 patient admissions annually it provides
a Day Care Centre that is visited by 2,500 patients per year and a Home
Support team that makes over 1000 visits per year. No charge is made to the
patients.
