PHYLLIS TUCKWELL HOSPICE NEWS

HOSPICE MARATHON RUNNERS OUT IN FORCE

The 25th anniversary of the Flora London Marathon saw a tremendous turn from the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice on Sunday as over 33,000 runners and approximately 500,000 spectators provided a carnival atmosphere.

Former Aldershot, Farnborough and Woking footballer COLIN FIELDER completed the course, his first Marathon, in 4 hours 10:22. The 41 year old from Bentley said afterwards. “It was a fantastic experience and the supporters along the route were great handing out sweets and drinks. Physically I felt fine but it was a tough endurance. Once is enough but it is something that will live with me for ever and I am so thankful for the Hospice for giving me the opportunity to run”.

Aldershot businessman IAN DAWKINS dressed up as Austin Powers and succeeded in completing the course in 6:16:52. He said afterwards “It was a terrific occasion. I was spurred on by the dedication of the runners around me. The positive attitude of everybody is unbelievable. I was worried on just 2 miles because my calf started playing up but I am so pleased to have completed the route. I am hoping to raise enough funds to supply a much needed van for the Hospice and I was determined to complete the course on the day”.

Farnborough based DAVE BOULTER was the fastest Hospice representative home in 3:58:46.  Other Hospice runners who completed the route were: ROBIN BUNCE (Tongham) 4:04:00, COLIN FIELDER (Bentley) 4:10:22, PAM BERRIMAN (Farnborough) (4:11:06), ALISTER TAWSE (Enton Green), 4:20:47 PAUL BARKER (Farnborough) (4:40:44), ANGELA TUTIN (Guildford) 4:46:07, NIGEL WOOD (Ash Vale) 5:02:04, STEVE POUND (Farnham) 5:08:50, MARK FRANCIS (Ash Vale) 5:13:42, JAMES MENDELSSOHN (Tilford) 5:19:07, MARK RUMSBY (Lightwater) 5:27:37, CAROLINE HEALE (Guildford) 5:37:37), KAREN ATHERFOLD (Farnborough) 5:51:23, NORMA DUDLEY (Farnborough), 5:51:23, IAN DAWKINS (Aldershot) 6:16:52, DENISE TONKS (Farnborough), 6:19:23 MAUREEN COFFIN (Farnham) 6:23:28

Hospice Community Fundraiser Graham Brookland said “We would like to thank everybody who ran for the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice. The London Marathon always brings the best of everybody and this was no exception. The runners have made great sacrifices to prepare themselves for the big day whilst also raising funds for the local hospice at the same time. We have already had pledges in excess of £20,000 from the runners and by the final total we are hopeful that they will have raised over £30,000 between them. What a fantastic effort from everybody and we are truly grateful to them all”.
