WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP
It costs £10,000 a day to keep the Phyllis
Tuckwell Hospice open. That's £7 a minute or £3.9 million a year.
Less than 16% of our costs are covered by
the NHS, way below the national average for hospices at 32%. This means
that compared to many other hospices, we are under extreme pressure to
develop income from other sources. Our fundraising and shops teams,
assisted by many capable and willing volunteers in the local area, work
hard in the shops, at the Hospice and across our territory to organise
and promote events and other appeals in order to generate the missing
millions. The Tuckwell CHASE Lottery raised £170,000 for us last year.
The chart below shows all of our sources of
income from our last financial year. The Hospice would not be here today
if it was not for the generosity of many individuals who have left gifts
to the Hospice in their Will. Some of these gifts amount to tens of
thousands of pounds, others may be one or two hundred pounds. However
big or small the gift, the Hospice cannot continue to operate without
them. Two years ago, the Hospice received an nearly £1million from gifts
left in people's wills; last year the total was £714,000. Fluctuations
like these make it very difficult to plan Hospice services.
In March 2006 we had to close four of our
eighteen beds. At the same time, we launched the
Living Appeal
to help us raise an extra £500,000 every year, to help make sure that
the Hospice can continue to provide care for local people with a
terminal illness. Please help the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice by supporting
the Living Appeal in any way you can.
Most of the Hospice's costs are related to
the cost of employing doctors, nurses and therapists to care for our
patients, with less than 3% spent on management and administration.
Expenditure 2004-05, Total
