Organised by the
Rotary Clubs of Farnborough this was the fourth and most
successful “Picnic” in aid of the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice.
A sell out crowd on
Saturday evening was hugely entertained with tribute acts to The
Beatles (Back Beat Beatles), Tina Turner (Dolly James) and Queen
(Magic A Kind Of Queen).
On Sunday evening a
wonderful patriotic crowd numbering 3000 saw a first time visit to
Farnborough of the Royal
Philharmonic Concert Orchestra. Playing such classics from
Puccini, Strauss and Tchaikovsky the entertainment concluded with a
traditionally British Pomp and Circumstance Proms finale with a
rousing Grand Firework Display to the 1812 Overture.
“Picnic” Chairman
John Anderson spoke enthusiastically after the event stating,
“The sun shone on Farnborough for the weekend. Three days before the
event we had grave concerns that we would be able to stage it due to
the weather.
“We are so
thankful to so many people and organisations for their support. A
lot of Rotary Clubs supported the event magnificently and worked
extremely hard but the camaraderie and fellowship was great.
“To all the
sponsors, Rushmoor Borough Council, Hampshire Fire and Police we
thank you sincerely for your support. We are also grateful to the
forbearance of the local residents for putting up with the parking,
noise and general disturbance.
“We are also aware that with
increased numbers attending you learn lessons for the future and the
toilet facilities were inadequate and this will be addressed.”
Mr Anderson also
highlighted the importance of why the event was staged continuing,
“Our aim was to
raise vital funds for the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice who have been a
beneficiary at each “Picnic” event whilst also providing
entertainment for the local community. It is such a well respected
local charity based for local people and it plays a significant part
within Farnborough and surrounding areas.
“Although the
Farnborough Rotary Club are the main organisers of the event we are
indebted to Graham Brookland at the Hospice without whom the event
would not have been so successful.
“It will take a
number of weeks before we are able to announce the final donation to
the Hospice but we are confident it will be a significant amount to
a much needed cause”.
Organisers wish
to thank all sponsors to “The Picnic” without whose generosity and
financial backing in the early planning it would not be possible to
stage the event: Central Heating Services, Clydesdale Bank, Fairview
New Homes Ltd, McCarthy and Stone (Assisted Living), Farnborough
Business Park, Key Property Investment Ltd, The PD Group, EBB Paper,
Farnborough News and Mail, Mitchell and Partners, Davies, Blunden
and Evans,
Rushmoor Borough
Council, TAG Aviation, BAE Systems, Sanya China Travel and
Stagecoach Buses.
